Job Summary:
The Ethnographic Archivist is responsible for the management, preservation, and accessibility of ethnographic collections within the library and information science field. This position requires a strong understanding of archival principles, preservation techniques, and an in-depth knowledge of ethnographic materials. The Ethnographic Archivist will play a crucial role in organizing and maintaining collections, ensuring their long-term preservation, and promoting their accessibility to researchers, scholars, and the wider community.
Responsibilities:
1. Develop and implement strategies for the acquisition, processing, preservation, and organization of ethnographic collections.
2. Assess, appraise, and select ethnographic materials for inclusion in the library's archival collections according to established guidelines and ethical standards.
3. Conduct thorough research and analysis to identify and evaluate the cultural, historical, and preservation significance of ethnographic materials.
4. Create detailed inventories, finding aids, and descriptive metadata to facilitate access and discovery of ethnographic collections.
5. Collaborate with library staff, scholars, and researchers to provide guidance and support in accessing and utilizing the ethnographic collections.
6. Develop and implement preservation plans and techniques to ensure the long-term sustainability of ethnographic materials, including digitization, conservation, and storage practices.
7. Stay up-to-date with emerging trends, technologies, and best practices in ethnographic archiving and contribute to ongoing professional development in the field.
8. Contribute to the development and implementation of policies and procedures pertaining to the acquisition, preservation, and accessibility of ethnographic collections.
9. Assist in the development and delivery of educational programs, workshops, and exhibitions that highlight the significance of ethnographic materials and their cultural context.
10. Foster partnerships and collaborations with external organizations, institutions, and communities to expand the reach and impact of the library's ethnographic collections.
Qualifications and Skills:
1. Master's degree in Library and Information Science or a related field.
2. Minimum of [X] years of professional experience in archival management, with a specific focus on ethnographic collections.
3. In-depth knowledge of archival principles, practices, and standards, including processing, preservation, and access strategies.
4. Strong understanding of ethnographic materials, cultural context, and the ethical considerations associated with their acquisition, preservation, and use.
5. Proficiency in archival description standards such as EAD (Encoded Archival Description) and DACS (Describing Archives: A Content Standard).

7. Familiarity with digitization, conservation, and preservation techniques used for ethnographic collections.
8. Proficient in using archival management systems, digital repositories, and library software.
9. Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
10. Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to effectively collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
11. Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
